The Sims 3 Sells 1.4 Million Copies at Retail in One Week

EA's The Sims 3 breaks internal sales record; performs despite heavy pre-release piracy.

It seems like you can't keep a good Sim down. Even though EA's The Sims 3 for PC and Mac ended up as the hot illegal torrent of last month, it hasn't stopped initial sales of the game at retail from breaking records.

Shift through 1.4 million PC/Mac copies in little over one week, The Sims 3 is now apparently the best-selling PC launch in EA's long history.

Electronic Arts Inc. today announced that the hotly anticipated The Sims™ 3, stormed retail shelves starting June 2nd and sold thru more than 1.4 million PC/Mac units within the first week making it the best-selling PC launch in EA's history. Fan intensity is evidenced through the more than 7 million downloads of player created content including: Sims, houses, stories and more.

The Sims 3, also available for download from the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPod touch, shot up to #1 paid app position on launch day and has maintained that spot since launch.

After suffering from illegal downloads numbering close to 200,000 only days before the June 2nd official launch day, The Sims 3 is certainly fighting the good fight.

Bryn says: OK, so great initial sales don't discount those crazy piracy figures, but I feel good for the EA guys right now. Hard work is paying off it would seem.

As an aside, the news I wrote regarding the piracy figures seemed to really strike a chord. I was surprised how honest the answers were, and just how many of you had actually illegally downloaded the game.
