Carmack Hints at a Lack of Dedicated Servers for Rage

id Software's John Carmack isn't committing to having dedicated servers for the new racer/shooter Rage.

Variety's game blog has posted a news piece which sees id Software's main man John Carmack admit that it's unlikely his new racer/shooter game Rage will support dedicated servers. This news is likely going to add fuel to already substantial firestorm which broke a couple of weeks ago when Infinity Ward said Modern Warfare 2 for the PC would not support dedicated servers.

John Carmack, co-founder and technical wizard of the developer, says the company doesn't plan to support dedicated servers for the multiplayer component of "Rage," id's upcoming new action game.

"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers," he says.

"The great thing is we won't have to be a pioneer on that," he says. "We'll see how it works out for everyone else."

Rage is set to release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime next year.

Bryn says: Even though this is not explicitly stated in the Variety article, I have to assume that the piece is only referring to the PC version of Rage. It's not been the best month for PC gamers has it? While I suppose there's still a chance id might include dedicated servers for online play, I have to think that if Carmack's talking like this at this stage, then hopes aren't high.
